Happiness per se

Here’s one simple question that I’d like to put to my blogger friends. What would make you happier?

1. Your tiny but honest gesture that made someone else happy while you faded from the picture

2. Something that you did despairingly, but which fetched you recognition and adulation

Please do justify your choice 🙂

  1. as much as I would like to say it's always going to be #1, I shud be honest and admit that #2 is equally appealing. Most of us, at some point or the other, do things that we don't like/approve of just to get the recognition. And I'm no different. It totally depends on the situation, I would say.

  2. If I have time to think and take decision then 1st 🙂 As T said 2nd is appealing..but then in long term it would always be the 1st choice that would pay till the end 🙂 Also,it's important to know for whom you are doing it..Yes for me it would be based on person too…!

  3. @Deven: Sure…I felt the same way :)@Analyst: Good…another one with me! :)@Titaxy: I commend your honest answer T…really!True, the situation does matter, and also the extent to which I had to 'do-it-for-what-its-worth'. Wouldn't you agree it has to be limited though, or one would forget 'real' happiness?@Nu: As I told T, the risk in 2nd is the factor of getting 'carried away' with the whole thing. The best example I can think of right now is Peter Keating from Fountainhead. Agree?

  4. We are not black not white but have shades of grey in our character…Little selfish, little noble, litttle ambitious, little well wishers and hence both are equally likely i think!

  5. I agree with Nish and T; but the question being what would make me 'happier' I'd have to go with #1.Happier cause it'll create a ripple effect of happy moments in the present and also in the moments of future whenever I'll be reminded of that act of goodness :DCool question Varsha :)Have a great weekend!!

  6. @Nish: Equally likey, hmmm, another point of view, but would the happiness be the same with both?@CB: Well said CB…I too think that its not just the present but the feel-good factor that it can bring us in future that matters too :)Thanks CB! 🙂

  7. That depends on who the 'someone' in the first point is. If it is someone I love and care about, then it is (1). Otherwise it is the second one.Yeah call me selfish, but at least I am honest 🙂

  9. I go with CB on this, as we are all human, sometimes looking for appreciation and recognition for our deeds. But what would make me happier? the first choice, without a doubt. The joy of seeing someone else' happiness has no equal. it is like a secret picture, you pull out when you are alone and gaze at it in joy. Definitely the first!

  10. @Zephyr: As I said earlier my intention was to get myriad views on a very simple question. I'm very glad that most people have voted for the first point, even if they back the second one also. Its heartening, noble thoughts still exist! Great! Thanks guys…for all your comments on this! 🙂
